Saab Tries The X-Factor Again

Saab isn't giving up on the X. Following the disastrous Subaru Impreza-based 9-2X and the shameful Chevy Trailbazer-based 9-7X, Saab will be hoping its 9-4X BioPower Concept, revealed Detroit show, will finally give it a foothold in the ever-profitable SUV segment. Despite calling it a concept vehicle it's clear that the 9-3-based 9-4X is very close to being production ready, although isn't the most exciting looking vehicle we've ever seen and could use a little more sex appeal to fend off the likes of the Land Rover LRX and Nissan Murano. It's ‘ice-block’ surfacing might sound cool on paper but in the metal it looks drab although the prospect of being powered by a 300hp, 400Nm, bio-fuel burning 2.0-litre turbo engine does help its case somewhat, as does Saab's new active XWD system, which will be standard.Inside, there's the usual mix of concept car fluff and production-spec parts, so we'd expect the general layout and the off-the-shelf steering to remain, while the four futuristic seats, glittery dials and green dashboard finish will probably be ditched. The fold-out ski-holders could make it to production, though.
