Mitsubishi is planning to display a hatchback version of its new Lancer at the Geneva Show next March. Just as Concept-X (2005 Tokyo) and the Prototype-X (2007 Detroit) previewed the new Lancer and Evo X, Prototype-S follows on from the Concept-Sportback show car (2005 Frankfurt) to preview the shape of the forthcoming Lancer Sportback which is due to go on sale later this year. Like the saloon, the hatch is a fine looker, with its wedge profile, aggressive stance, broad shoulders and stylish rear end. The Prototype-S boasts an Evo X front end but is based on the upcoming Lancer Ralliart chassis, boasting a 240hp/343Nm 2.0-litre turbo engine, twin-clutch SST gearbox and full-time 4WD with Mitsubishi's active centre differential as standard. Mitsubishi expects the five-door Lancer will be its most important car in Europe, representing 70 percent of the Lancer's sales volume. We'll have more details as the car's launch approaches.
