Lancia's Delta debuts

The new Lancia Delta is an important car. Not only does it herald a new evolution of the Lancia brand it's also likely to be the first Lancia built in right-hand-drive in 14 years. Designed in-house, and based on an extended Bravo platform, the Delta is certainly distinctive and unique - Lancia's designs have become increasingly avant garde in the past decade even if you'd struggle to call any of them beautiful. The interior is heavily based on that of the Bravo but has upmarket materials, ritzier colour schemes and higher specification. The rear seats slide and recline, for example, while a Bose audio system can also be ordered. The engine range is comprised entirely of turbo-charged motors, ranging from a 120hp 1.4-litre to a 200hp 2.0-litre diesel, while three six-speed transmissions (manual, clutchless manual or automatic) are offered. The Delta goes on sale in Europe in the summer of 2008 but isn't expected in the UK until late in the year. Ireland may not see the Delta until 2009.
