Opel's Vectra replacement unveiled!

The Vectra is dead, long live the all-new Insignia. Stung by criticism of the blandness of the old model, Opel has pulled out all the design stops for its all-new large family car. Check out the svelte coupé-like shape with hints of Jaguar XF and Lexus GS about the roofline. Note the BMW 6-Series-style rump and do I detect a whiff of Audi about the front end? Even the flanks have been infused with some BMW-style ‘flame surfacing’ to help it stand out in what is a rather bland class of car overall. The car debuts at the London Motor Show in July (which give you some indication of how important the UK market is to Opel/Vauxhall) and goes on sale in right-hand drive in November.Although we have no official pictures of the cabin spy photography has indicated that the Insignia will also be major step forward in terms of design, quality and technology. Mechanically, we know that front-wheel drive will be standard but computer-controlled all-wheel drive will also be available from launch. Seven engines will be offered, ranging from a 115hp four-cylinder 1.8-litre unit to a turbo-charged V6 with 260hp. Three new, low-CO2 diesels will also be offered, all 2.0-litres in capacity but producing between 110hp to 160hp. Innovations include adaptive suspension and a lighting system which uses nine different light beams to help the driver see around corners and up inclines. We're also expect seven airbags, ESP and climate control to be offered as standard as Opel will we desperate to ensure the Insignia sells strongly from launch and claw back the sales advantage being enjoyed by its arch-rival, Ford.
